Interview – Bertrand Duchaufour

Bertrand Duchaufour is one of the very few perfumers who works independently, and who is trained in the classical style. His extravagant and very personal creations have brought him an immense success among rare essence lovers, but also a reputation for artistic integrity.

ELYSEE: When and how did you create your first perfume? How did you discover your passion for perfumes?

BERTRAND DUCHAUFOUR: As my first creation, I designed an ambiance fragrance with a kind of mandarin note. It was a really long time ago, in 1987.

E: Which are your favourite notes?
BD: I don’t have favourite notes. I absolutely like all floral traces, I appreciate davana, blackcurrant, but I am really excited to use any kind of beautiful natural elements. But I never forget the intrinsic quality of a lot of chemicals, whose particularity gives all the originality and modernity of a fragrance note.

E: Where does your inspiration come from?
BD: From everywhere: a word, an idea, a concept, a story, a picture, a landscape, a raw material alone can be at the origin of inspiration.

E: How do your memories smell like?
BD: That’s a special question: scents never come in my dreams, it is even more rare to be in my memories.

E: How would you define your olfactory creations?
BD: They are globally complex, deep and sophisticated like a thousand-page book.

E: What is your dearest memory linked to a perfume?
BD: Maybe the Chanel No. 19, one of my first girlfriend’s fragrance, who opened up this world to me.

E: Tell us about the process of creating a perfume.
BD: As soon as I am inspired by something, I try to build a note (more or less complex) and I make it evolve until a well balance scent. It has to be strong, clear, diffusive enough and harmonious.

E: How does a day of the perfumer Bertrand Duchaufour look like?
BD: I create several fragrances at the same time. I pass from one to the other very quickly. Working in oppositions and contrast of fragrance notes is the best way to take distance. As soon as one is considered correct, I let it evolve by its own, macerating and giving it time. This gives the best answer to the quality of my work. It can be good or, simply, not achieved. If the fragrance is not satisfying after a time of maceration, I either go even further or I give it up.

E: Where did you travel last time?
BD: I always travel a lot, but I do it more and more for professional reasons.

E: What impressed you the most?
BD: I am not impressed anymore. Too old for that.

E: You have created Copal Azur for Aedes de Venustas. Could you, please, tell us a few words about the story of this perfume?
BD: The brief was clear; I had to retranslate the atmosphere of a place in Mesoamerica: Tulum, well known for its incense called copal. I just tried to represent this incense surrounded by the presence of sand (beaches), marine notes and the freshness of the jungle.

E: The most beautiful season of the year is coming. Which scent do you associate with the beginning of the winter?
BD: Fresh, even cold effects, ozone notes, camphorous pine tree notes, but, as well, of course, all the contrary notes, warm woods (fir balsam from the same pine tree), smokey chimney-like effects… spicy cloves mixed with orange, dry fruits, and so on.

ELYSEE: Când și cum ați creat primul dumneavoastră parfum? Cum ați descoperit pasiunea pentru parfumuri?
BERTRAND DUCHAUFOUR: Prima mea creație a fost un parfum ambiental cu un fel de notă de mandarină. Aceasta se întâmpla cu mult timp în urmă, în anul 1987.

E: Care sunt notele dumneavoastră preferate?
BD: Nu am note preferate. Îmi plac absolut toate aromele florale, apreciez davana, coacăzele negre, dar sunt foarte încântat să folosesc orice fel de elemente naturale aromate. Nu am uitat, însă, niciodată calitatea intrinsecă a multor substanțe chimice, a căror particularitate dă naștere originalității și modernității unei note de parfum.

E: De unde vă inspirați?
BD: De oriunde: de la un cuvânt, o idee, un concept, o poveste, o imagine, un peisaj. Până și un material brut poate fi o sursă de inspirație.

E: Cum miros amintirile dumneavoastră?
BD: Aceasta este o întrebare dificilă: Nu visez în note olfactive, la fel cum rareori amintirile mele au miros.

E: Cum ați defini creațiile olfactive?
BD: Ele sunt complexe, în general, profunde și sofisticate, asemenea unui volum cu mii de pagini.

E: Care a rămas cea mai dragă amintire legată de un parfum?
BD: Aș tinde să afirm că, probabil, Chanel No. 19, purtat de prima mea iubită, cea care mi-a deschis fascinația pentru lumea parfumurilor.

E: Explicați, vă rog, procesul de creare a unui parfum.
BD: De îndată ce sunt inspirat de ceva, încerc să construiesc o notă (mai mult sau mai puțin complexă) și o fac să evolueze până la un parfum echilibrat. Acesta trebuie să fie suficient de puternic, clar, difuz și armonios.

E: Cum arată o zi din viața parfumierului Bertrand Duchaufour?
BD: Creez mai multe parfumuri în același timp, trec foarte repede de la unul la altul. Lucrul în mijlocul opozițiilor și contrastul notelor de parfum reprezintă cea mai bună metodă de păstrare a obiectivității. De îndată ce consider că una din creații este corectă, las parfumul să evolueze singur, printr-un proces de macerare, oferindu-i timp. Astfel, obțin cel mai bun răspuns referitor la calitatea muncii mele. Poate fi un rezultat bun sau, pur și simplu, nu suficient de satisfăcător. Dacă parfumul nu este satisfăcător după o perioadă de macerare, fie continui și îi mai ofer timp, fie renunț la el.

E: Unde ați călătorit ultima dată?
BD: Obișnuiesc să călătoresc foarte des, dar, în ultimul timp, o fac din ce în ce mai mult în scopuri profesionale.

E: Ce v-a impresionat cel mai mult?
BD: Nu mai sunt atât de ușor de impresionat. Sunt poate prea bătrân pentru asta.

E: Ați creat apa de parfum Aedes de Venustas Copal Azur. Ați putea să ne povestiți puțin despre acest parfum?
BD: Cerința a fost clară: a trebuit să retransmit atmosfera unui loc în America Centrală: Tulum, cunoscut pentru tămâia sa numită copal. Am încercat să reprezint mirosul de tămâie înconjurată de prezența nisipului, a notelor marine și a prospețimii junglei.

E: Se apropie cel mai frumos anotimp al anului. Cu ce miros asociați începutul iernii?
BD: Note proaspete, chiar reci, note ozonice, miros de pin, dar și, bineînțeles, o sumedenie de note contrare, iz de lemn cald (balsam de brad), note de fum, combinate cu aroma portocalelor, a fructelor uscate și așa mai departe.
